Cape tortrix

The Cape tortrix (Lozotaenia capensana) is a significant insect pest belonging to the family Tortricidae, within the order Lepidoptera. Originally identified in South Africa, this moth species has become a concern in various agricultural regions, where it impacts both commercial fruit production and ornamental nurseries.

This pest is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide array of host plants. Major agricultural crops susceptible to infestation include grapevines, citrus trees, pome fruits like apples and pears, and various soft fruit bushes. Due to its broad diet, it can survive and proliferate even when primary hosts are not available, utilizing various weed species as alternative food sources.

The biological cycle of this insect consists of four stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult moth. The number of generations per year depends heavily on the local climate, with warmer regions supporting more frequent breeding cycles. Female moths deposit eggs in clusters on the upper or lower surfaces of leaves, which hatch into larvae that immediately begin to feed.

Damage caused by the Cape tortrix is distinct and severe. The larvae are notorious for webbing leaves together using silken threads to create protective nests. Within these shelters, they skeletonize foliage, causing premature leaf fall. When larvae feed on developing fruit, they create surface excavations or deep boreholes, which facilitate secondary infections by pathogens and render the harvest unmarketable.

Effective management requires a combination of monitoring and intervention strategies. The use of pheromone traps is essential for tracking population density and timing insecticide applications. Biological control using parasitoids is often encouraged in sustainable systems. Cultural practices, such as removing infested plant parts during winter pruning and keeping orchards free of weeds, also play a critical role in limiting the damage caused by this moth.
