Green bottle fly

The genus Lucilia, belonging to the family Calliphoridae (blow flies) of the order Diptera, is widely recognized in agriculture and veterinary medicine as a serious pest. These insects, commonly known as green bottle flies, are characterized by their brilliant metallic green or copper-green appearance, which makes them easily identifiable.

The biological cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, three larval stages, pupa, and adult. While adults feed on floral nectar and decaying organic matter, their reproductive behavior poses a significant threat. Females often lay eggs on open wounds or soiled areas of livestock, initiating an infestation known as myiasis.

The primary economic damage caused by Lucilia involves the health deterioration of livestock, particularly sheep. The larvae feed on the living tissues of the host, leading to severe inflammation, necrosis, and systemic infections. If left untreated, these infestations can lead to significant production losses or even the death of the animal.

Signs of infestation include restless behavior in animals, constant scratching or biting at affected areas, and a distinct foul odor from the site of the wound. The tissues become raw and exudative, quickly attracting more flies and allowing secondary pathogens to enter the bloodstream of the animal.
