The Common green bottle fly (Lucilia caesar) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Calliphoridae. Recognized by its brilliant metallic green coloration, this insect is a significant pest within agricultural and livestock management systems. Understanding its biology is essential for maintaining the hygiene standards required in modern farming practices.

While Lucilia caesar is not a plant parasite, its role as a pest in the agricultural chain is critical. It primarily threatens processed agricultural products and livestock. By landing on wounds or moist organic materials, the flies induce myiasis in cattle and contaminate stored protein-rich goods, causing significant economic losses to producers and processors.

The life cycle of the species is characterized by high reproductive capacity. An adult female deposits masses of eggs on suitable organic substrates, and the larvae hatch quickly to begin feeding. Under optimal temperatures, the fly can complete its development in just over a week. This rapid turnover creates challenges for control, as populations can explode in a very short amount of time if sanitation is neglected.

The damage caused by these flies is both direct and indirect. Direct damage occurs when larvae feed on livestock tissues or high-value organic stores, rendering them unusable. Indirect damage involves the mechanical transmission of pathogens, including various bacteria and parasites, which can be spread across farm premises through the flies' continuous movement between waste sites and clean production areas.

Effective management and protection require a multi-tiered approach focusing on prevention:
