The Lucilia cuprina, commonly known as the Australian sheep blowfly, is a member of the order Diptera and the family Calliphoridae. While not a direct plant pest, it is a devastating insect of economic importance in the agricultural sector, specifically in sheep farming, where it causes the condition known as sheep strike.
The primary damage caused by this insect involves the larvae feeding on the living skin tissue of the host. The adult females are attracted to moisture and odors emanating from the fleece, where they lay their eggs. Once hatched, the larvae aggregate and secrete enzymes that liquefy the tissue, creating large, painful wounds that can lead to rapid health decline.
The biological cycle of Lucilia cuprina is temperature-dependent and highly efficient. It encompasses the egg, three larval instars, pupa, and adult stages. Under optimal conditions, the life cycle can be completed in as little as 10 to 14 days, allowing the population to explode quickly during warm, humid weather patterns commonly found in pasture environments.
The harmfulness of this pest is immense, causing significant economic losses through reduced wool production, weight loss in animals, and the necessity for costly veterinary treatments. If left untreated, the severe tissue damage can lead to toxemia, secondary bacterial infections, and, eventually, the death of the affected sheep.
