Lyctus simplex

Lyctus simplex is a species of beetle belonging to the family Bostrichidae within the order Coleoptera. Commonly known as a type of powderpost beetle, this insect is a significant pest that targets dry, seasoned wood, causing substantial damage to structural timber, flooring, and furniture in domestic and industrial environments.

This pest primarily attacks hardwoods, specifically those with a sufficient starch content, such as oak, ash, and walnut. The susceptibility of wood is often linked to its moisture content and species composition. Buildings using untreated lumber are at high risk, as the beetles can easily infest beams, rafters, and decorative wooden paneling if left unprotected.

The biology of Lyctus simplex centers on its larval stage, which performs the destructive work. Adult females lay their eggs in the pores of the wood. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the material, feeding on starch and wood fibers. The duration of the life cycle can vary based on environmental conditions, typically lasting several months, during which time the larvae transform wood into a fine, powdery frass.

Damage is characterized by the presence of numerous small, circular exit holes, approximately 1-2 mm in diameter, often accompanied by piles of fine, flour-like powder on surfaces beneath the infested area. As the infestation progresses, the internal structure of the wood is hollowed out, leading to significant structural weakening and eventual failure of the affected wooden elements.
