The apple leaf miner (Lyonetia clerkella) is a moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Lyonetiidae. It is a significant agricultural pest known for its larvae, which mine the leaves of various trees, causing both aesthetic and physiological damage to fruit crops.
This pest has a broad host range, primarily attacking members of the Rosaceae family. It is most commonly found on apple, pear, cherry, and quince trees. In addition to fruit orchards, it can also infest ornamental trees like rowan, hawthorn, and birch, allowing the population to persist in various landscape environments.
The life cycle of the apple leaf miner is multi-generational, with the number of generations per year dependent on local temperature and climate conditions. Adults overwinter in sheltered locations, such as under bark or leaf litter.
