Lyristes cicada

Lyristes is a genus of insects belonging to the Cicadidae family within the order Hemiptera. These insects are widely recognized in agricultural entomology for their impact on woody plants. As phytophagous pests, they utilize their piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on the sap of various agricultural hosts, posing a particular challenge in Mediterranean and warm-climate regions.

The primary hosts for this pest include a variety of orchard trees such as peaches, pears, and apples, as well as grapevines. Both adult cicadas and their soil-dwelling nymphs contribute to the overall stress on the plant. The damage is often cumulative, weakening the physiological processes of the tree over consecutive seasons.

The biological cycle of Lyristes is characterized by a long developmental period. Adult females oviposit into the tissue of young shoots, creating structural damage. The nymphs then drop to the ground and move to the root zone, where they feed on the root sap for several years. This subterranean phase makes them particularly difficult to detect before significant harm occurs.

Visible damage symptoms include the wilting of shoots, necrotic lesions at egg-laying sites, and branch breakage. During severe infestations, the growth of the canopy is stunted, and fruit quality decreases. The removal of nutrients from the host plant during the nymphal stage causes long-term vigor loss and may lead to the death of young, vulnerable saplings.

Management strategies focus on a combination of cultural and chemical practices. Pruning and destroying egg-infested branches is a critical preventive step. In areas with high pest pressure, strategic insecticide applications during the adult emergence phase are utilized. Maintaining soil health and tree vigor remains the best defense to help plants withstand and recover from cicada feeding damage.
