Description

The Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) is a primate species belonging to the Cercopithecidae family. Known for its intelligence and adaptability, this animal has become a significant agricultural pest in Japan, as habitat loss forces troops to move into orchards and farmlands to forage for high-calorie human food sources.

This species causes substantial damage to a wide range of horticultural and agricultural crops. Vulnerable plants include apples, pears, peaches, and citrus fruits, as well as vegetables such as potatoes, cabbages, and beans. Often, macaques arrive just before harvest time, consuming or destroying a large percentage of the yield.

The biology of the species is defined by highly social behavior and extreme problem-solving capabilities. Living in troops allows them to efficiently navigate areas and exploit resources. Because they are highly intelligent, they can quickly habituate to static deterrents, requiring farmers to constantly rotate or update their pest management tactics.

Damage symptoms are extensive: beyond simply eating fruit, they are known to break tree limbs, trample seedlings, and uproot vegetable patches. This activity leads to immediate harvest losses and long-term damage to the health and structural integrity of orchards, resulting in decreased future production yields.

Management and control strategies involve a multi-layered approach. The most effective physical barriers include electrified fencing and specialized netting. Farmers also utilize acoustic deterrents, strobe lights, and guard dogs to protect their land. In some regions, population management programs are implemented to mitigate the human-wildlife conflict.
