Barbary macaque

The Barbary macaque, scientifically known as Macaca sylvanus, is a primate species primarily found in the Atlas Mountains of North Africa. From an agronomic perspective, this species is recognized as a significant nuisance for farmers, as these primates frequently venture into agricultural lands in search of supplemental food sources.

The crops most susceptible to Barbary macaque damage include various fruit species such as apples, pears, peaches, and figs. Furthermore, they are known to raid cereal fields, consuming grains and damaging stems. Their foraging activity typically peaks during the ripening stage, leading to considerable economic losses for local fruit growers.

The biology of the species involves living in social groups with complex hierarchy and high cognitive abilities. Their ability to learn and adapt to human intervention makes them a difficult target for conventional pest control methods. They are opportunistic feeders, easily switching their diet based on seasonal availability of cultivated crops.

Damage inflicted by macaques is characterized by extensive mechanical destruction. Beyond direct consumption of fruits, they often break branches, damage tree bark, and trample vegetation. This behavior leads to a decrease in long-term plant health and increased vulnerability to secondary infections from pests and diseases.
