Macrochenus isabellinus is a dangerous representative of the longhorn beetle family (Cerambycidae), belonging to the order Coleoptera. This species is a hidden wood-boring insect whose life cycle is inextricably linked to the infestation of healthy and weakened trees. In agroforestry, it is considered a serious pest capable of causing significant economic damage to wood and fruit-bearing crops.

This pest specializes in damaging various broad-leaved tree species. Within its natural range, it frequently infests plants belonging to the Rosaceae family and other deciduous cultures. It poses a particular threat to orchards, where larvae penetrate trunks and skeletal branches, gradually destroying the plant's vascular system, which leads to reduced yields and eventual tree mortality.

The biology of Macrochenus isabellinus is characterized by a prolonged developmental cycle, often lasting from one to several years, depending on climatic conditions. The female lays eggs in bark crevices or specifically drilled holes. The emerged larvae bore deep into the wood, creating winding galleries while feeding on the cambium and phloem, which significantly disrupts the tree's physiological processes.

Damage symptoms manifest as crown wilting, the appearance of specific entry holes in the bark, and the accumulation of frass (larval excrement). The primary damage involves technical destruction of the wood and the obstruction of sap flow. As a result of larval activity, the tree becomes highly susceptible to secondary infections, fungal pathogens, and attacks by other opportunistic pests.

Protection measures require an integrated approach: maintaining high sanitary standards in plantations and the timely culling of severely infested specimens. Using pheromone traps for monitoring adult population density during the flight period is highly effective. In cases of massive infestation, contact and systemic insecticides are employed, along with stem injections, which provide targeted action against larvae hidden deep within the woody tissues.
