African white rice borer

Maliarpha separatella, commonly known as the African white rice borer, is a destructive moth species within the Pyralidae family. It is a major pest for rice cultivation across sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar, where it causes significant yield losses by targeting the main stems of rice plants.

The larvae are specialized feeders that primarily infest rice (Oryza sativa). By boring into the stalks, the caterpillars disrupt the nutrient flow from the roots to the panicles. If the infestation occurs during the early vegetative stage, it can cause the death of the central shoot, while attacks during the reproductive phase lead to unfilled, empty grains.

The life cycle begins with eggs laid on the leaves, followed by larval penetration into the stem. The caterpillar feeds internally, protected from many external predators and environmental factors. Pupation occurs within the stem, usually near the base, which allows the insect to survive in crop stubble after the harvest is completed.

Farmers often identify the presence of this pest by the characteristic symptom known as "whiteheads." These are sterile, white panicles that stand out against the healthy green crop. Because the damage happens inside the plant tissue, it is difficult to control with contact insecticides, making preventative measures highly important.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is crucial for controlling this borer. Key strategies include:

• Removal and destruction of crop stubble post-harvest to reduce the next generation's population.
• The use of resistant or tolerant rice varieties developed for local conditions.
• Implementing appropriate irrigation management to minimize the success of larval entry into stems.
• Strategic application of systemic insecticides if pest population thresholds are exceeded.
