The Florida thrips (Manothrips floridensis) is a small insect belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. This pest is recognized as a significant threat to various agricultural and ornamental crops, feeding by piercing plant tissues and extracting cell sap, which leads to substantial physiological stress in affected plants.
This species has a broad host range, particularly affecting plants in greenhouse environments, ornamental gardens, and specialty nurseries. The insect prefers young, succulent tissues such as developing leaves and floral buds, where it can easily access nutrients, causing stunted growth and poor development in highly susceptible varieties.
The life cycle of Manothrips floridensis consists of egg, two larval stages, propupa, pupa, and adult. Development is highly sensitive to environmental factors; higher temperatures significantly accelerate their reproductive rate. Females lay eggs inside the plant tissue, which protects the offspring from external environmental fluctuations and many contact insecticides.
Damage caused by this pest is characterized by distinctive silvery or chlorotic spots on leaves, which often turn into necrotic streaks or patches.
