Taxonomy: The ground pearl (Margarodes greeni) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Margarodidae. These specialized soil-dwelling insects are notorious for their cryptic lifestyle, spending the vast majority of their life cycle underground attached to the roots of host plants, which makes early detection extremely difficult for agronomists.

Affected crops: This pest primarily affects grapevines, causing significant economic losses in viticulture. It can also infest a variety of ornamental plants and certain fruit-bearing trees. Due to its subterranean nature, the infestations often go unnoticed until the host plant shows clear signs of decline, such as wilting, chlorosis, or lack of vigor during the growing season.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Margarodes greeni is complex and includes stages such as eggs, crawlers (larvae), cysts, and adults. The cystic stage is particularly noteworthy as it provides the pest with high tolerance to environmental stressors and some chemical treatments. Adult females lay eggs in the soil near the root zone, and emerging crawlers migrate to find suitable feeding sites on the roots.

Damage and pest status: The pest damages plants by piercing root tissues and sucking the sap. This feeding process results in root galling, tissue necrosis, and reduced nutrient uptake. As the root system is compromised, the plant experiences reduced growth, poor fruit quality, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections from soil-borne pathogens. In severe cases, the entire plant may die due to the cumulative stress of nutrient depletion.

Protection measures: Managing Margarodes greeni requires a multi-faceted approach, as there are no easy curative solutions once a site is infested. Effective strategies include:
