Ground pearl scale

Systematic position: Margarodes prieskaensis belongs to the family Margarodidae, commonly known as ground pearls or giant scale insects, within the order Hemiptera. These insects are biologically distinct due to their soil-dwelling habits and their ability to form cyst stages that protect them from environmental stress.

Host plants: The primary agricultural damage is caused to grapevines (Vitis vinifera). The pest attaches itself to the root system, where it feeds on the sap of the host plant. It is primarily found in arid or semi-arid regions where the soil structure supports the life requirements of the different developmental stages.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle includes a mobile first-instar crawler stage that searches for roots. Once a suitable host root is located, the nymph attaches itself and secretes a waxy, spherical, pearl-like shell. In this cystic stage, the insect can remain dormant for several years, which allows it to survive long periods of unfavorable conditions before completing its development.

Damage and impact: Feeding by large populations of ground pearls on roots leads to significant plant stress. Affected grapevines often exhibit reduced vigor, nutrient deficiencies (chlorosis), and decreased fruit yield. In severe infestations, the cumulative damage to the root system leads to the gradual decline and eventual death of the vines.

Protection measures: Controlling Margarodes prieskaensis is extremely challenging because of the insect's subterranean existence and resistant cyst stage. Management focuses on:

• Strict nursery stock certification to prevent the introduction of the pest to clean fields.
• Selection of rootstocks that demonstrate tolerance or resistance to soil-dwelling pests.
• Implementation of strict quarantine protocols for soil and agricultural equipment movement.
• Proper vine management to ensure overall plant vigor and resilience against pest attacks.
