Systematic position: Trimen's ground pearl (Margarodes trimeni) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Margarodidae. This species is a significant subterranean pest that is known for its cryptic lifestyle, making it a challenging target for agricultural pest management due to its ability to live deep within the soil profile.

Host plants and damage: The primary host of this pest is the grapevine (Vitis vinifera). The damage is caused by both nymphs and adult stages, which attach themselves to the roots of the vine. By inserting their stylets into the root tissues, they extract essential plant sap. This infestation results in reduced vine vigor, chlorosis, diminished yield, and in severe cases, the death of the entire plant.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of Margarodes trimeni is uniquely adapted to survive harsh conditions. Nymphs can enter a period of prolonged dormancy by forming a hard, waxy cyst, which gives them the appearance of a small pearl. This cyst stage allows the pest to persist in the soil for several years, even in the absence of suitable host roots or during unfavorable climatic periods.

Economic impact: The economic threat posed by this pest is high, particularly because infestations are often detected only after the vine shows significant signs of decline. Because they live underground, the ground pearls can spread across vineyards slowly but steadily, destroying the root systems of mature vines and necessitating expensive replacement of infected vineyards, as currently available pesticides have limited success.
