Systematic position: Megachile thoracica belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Megachilidae. These insects are commonly known as leafcutter bees. While they play a significant role in pollination, their nesting habits classify them as minor pests in nursery production and ornamental gardening.

Host plants: These bees target a wide range of broad-leaved plants, favoring species with soft or thin foliage. Common targets include roses, wisteria, lilac, and various ornamental shrubs. They are highly selective, preferring specific leaf textures that are easy to cut and transport.

Biology and life cycle: During the active season, females seek out suitable nesting sites, such as hollow twigs, rotting wood, or cavities in the soil. The life cycle involves constructing individual cells lined with precise leaf fragments. These cells are provisioned with pollen and nectar, upon which an egg is laid, ensuring the next generation is protected within the leaf-made chamber.

Character of damage and economic impact: The damage is diagnostic: distinct, uniform, semi-circular or oval pieces removed from the leaf margins.
