Megacyllene

Megacyllene is a genus of longhorned beetles (Cerambycidae) within the order Coleoptera. These beetles are widely recognized for their striking coloration, typically featuring yellow wavy bands against a dark body. One of the most significant species in this genus is Megacyllene robiniae, commonly known as the locust borer, which is a major pest of black locust trees.

The primary hosts for these beetles are hardwood trees, with a strong preference for locust species. The damage is primarily caused by the larvae, which tunnel deep into the heartwood and sapwood. This boring activity disrupts the vascular system of the tree, causing nutrient blockage, structural weakness, and sometimes total mortality of the infested plant.

The life cycle of Megacyllene is typically annual. Adults emerge in late summer and early autumn to feed on pollen and mate. Females deposit eggs in the bark crevices of host trees. The larvae hatch and bore into the tree, where they feed throughout the autumn and spring, reaching maturity and pupating inside the wood before emerging as adults the following season.

Signs of infestation include the presence of fine, sawdust-like frass pushing out of bark cracks and small, round holes on the trunk surface. As larvae chew through the wood, they create complex galleries that weaken the timber. Severely infested trees become prone to wind breakage and often show crown dieback, which is a clear indicator of systemic structural damage.

Integrated pest management strategies are essential to minimize population levels:

• Removal and destruction of heavily infested trees during the winter months to eliminate larvae before adult emergence.
• Application of contact or systemic insecticides to trunks during the adult flight period to prevent egg-laying.
• Encouraging natural predators, such as woodpeckers, which can significantly reduce larval populations in the wood.
• Maintaining tree vigor through proper silvicultural practices to help trees withstand minor infestations.
