As a wood-boring pest, it plays a significant role in the degradation of host trees, primarily affecting specific deciduous species in regions where it is endemic or has been introduced.

The host range of this beetle mainly includes leguminous trees, such as various species of the genus Prosopis. These insects are attracted to weakened or stressed trees, often focusing their attacks on trunks and larger branches, which serves as the primary feeding ground for their larvae.

The life cycle of Megacyllene crinicornis is characterized by a complete metamorphosis, consisting of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically deposit eggs in cracks or crevices of the bark. Once hatched, the larvae bore into the tree, creating intricate gallery systems in the cambium and xylem layers, which can take several months to complete before pupation occurs.

The primary damage is caused by larval boring, which disrupts the tree’s vascular system. This interference with nutrient and water transport leads to branch dieback, crown thinning, and overall tree decline. If the infestation is severe or repeated over multiple seasons, the weakened structural integrity can lead to the eventual death of the host tree.
