This species is a specialized pest of woody plants, predominantly affecting various tree species within its natural range. Like many members of its family, adult beetles exhibit a distinctive coloration that assists in camouflage on bark or flowers.

Megacyllene mellyi primarily targets weakened or stressed trees. The larvae cause the most significant damage to broadleaf species by boring tunnels into the phloem and sapwood. Unlike many other longhorn beetles, this species can show high activity in forest stands where hydrological balance is disrupted or where trees have suffered mechanical trunk injuries.

The lifecycle of this pest is typical for wood-boring insects: females lay eggs into bark crevices or specifically gnawed niches. Upon completing its growth, the larva pupates within a specialized pupal chamber, after which the adult beetle emerges by boring an exit hole to the exterior.

Damage symptoms include numerous winding galleries under the bark and within the trunk, which disrupt sap flow and cause general tree decline. High population density can lead to the death of young saplings or a severe decrease in wood quality in mature trees. The presence of the pest is often visually indicated by frass (bore dust) accumulating at the base of the trunk.
