Megopis

Systematic position. Megopis is a genus of longhorn beetles (family Cerambycidae, order Coleoptera). These insects are specialized wood-boring pests, known as xylophages, which spend the majority of their life cycle tunneling through the interior of host plants, causing significant economic damage to forestry and orchard environments.

Affected crops. The pest primarily targets a wide range of broad-leaved trees, including species of oak, beech, chestnut, and various fruit trees like apple and pear. They tend to infest weakened or stressed trees, though high population densities can eventually threaten healthy specimens, leading to significant timber loss or tree mortality.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females typically lay eggs in bark crevices or wood wounds. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the sapwood and heartwood, creating extensive galleries. This larval stage can persist for several years, depending on the environmental conditions and the nutritional quality of the host wood.

Damage and severity. The internal damage caused by larval activity disrupts the vascular system, effectively cutting off water and nutrient transport throughout the tree. This results in progressive crown dieback, structural instability of the trunk, and eventual tree failure. External signs include the presence of frass (a mixture of wood dust and excrement) at the base of the tree or around exit holes.

• Implement rigorous sanitary logging to remove infested trees from the area.
• Maintain optimal orchard health through proper watering and fertilization to discourage infestation.
• Conduct regular inspections for signs of larval galleries or adult emergence holes.
• Apply specialized insecticides to trunks during the adult flight and mating period.
• Prune and treat localized damage on trunks using appropriate protective fungicides and sealants.
