Megopis scabricornis

Systematic position: Megopis scabricornis belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorn beetles. It is a large, robust species within the Prioninae subfamily, which are primarily known for their wood-boring larvae that inhabit various woody plant species.

Host plants: This pest is a polyphagous species that targets primarily broad-leaved trees. Common hosts include oak, beech, elm, poplar, willow, and chestnut. While it shows a preference for stressed, decaying, or dying trees, large populations can attack healthy and vigorous trees, especially in managed forest environments or orchards.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is complex and spans several years, typically ranging from two to four years depending on environmental conditions. Adult females deposit eggs into bark crevices. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the bark and eventually penetrate deep into the heartwood, creating elaborate feeding tunnels filled with frass. The pupal stage also occurs within the wood, followed by the emergence of adults.

Character of damage and economic importance: The larval stage is the most destructive, as they consume the interior tissues of the trunk and larger limbs. Their feeding activities disrupt the tree's nutrient transport system, leading to crown dieback, structural instability, and eventually death of the tree. In terms of economic impact, infested timber loses its structural integrity and market value, making it useless for construction or furniture production.

Protection measures: Controlling Megopis scabricornis is challenging due to the larvae living deep inside the wood, rendering topical insecticide applications largely ineffective. Management focuses on silvicultural practices, including the prompt removal and destruction of infested wood to prevent the spread of the beetle population. Maintaining tree vitality through proper fertilization and irrigation, as well as protecting trunks from physical injury, remains the best defensive strategy.
