Megopis sinica

Megopis sinica is a large longhorn beetle belonging to the family Cerambycidae, within the order Coleoptera. This species is recognized as a significant wood-boring pest that primarily affects deciduous trees, posing a risk to both forest ecosystems and ornamental gardens by damaging the structural integrity of the timber.

This pest infests a variety of hardwood species, including oak, chestnut, poplar, and several other deciduous trees. While it frequently targets weakened or dying trees, particularly those suffering from environmental stress or previous infections, high population densities can lead to attacks on healthy trees, significantly impacting tree vitality.

The biology of Megopis sinica revolves around a long development cycle. Adults are nocturnal, making them difficult to monitor during the day. The larvae are the stage that causes the most damage; they bore into the inner bark and sapwood, eventually tunneling into the heartwood where they create wide, complex galleries over several years.

The damage caused by these insects is characterized by large entry/exit holes and the accumulation of frass (boring dust) at the base of the tree. As larvae consume the wood, they disrupt the tree's vascular system, leading to canopy thinning, branch dieback, and eventually structural failure of the tree, which can lead to its premature death.

Effective control measures focus primarily on preventative silvicultural practices. This includes the regular removal of infested, dead, or dying trees to reduce the population density of the beetle. Because the larvae live deep within the wood, topical insecticide applications are often ineffective, emphasizing the importance of integrated pest management strategies.
