Systematic position: The brown-legged click beetle (Melanotus brunnipes) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Elateridae. This species is a significant agricultural pest, well-known for its larval stage, commonly referred to as "wireworms," which cause substantial economic damage by feeding on the subterranean parts of various crop plants.

Host crops and damage: The larvae feed on a wide range of crops, including maize, sunflower, sugar beet, potato, and various cereals. By consuming germinating seeds, gnawing through roots, and destroying the root crown of young seedlings, the larvae cause thinning of plant stands, leading to significant losses in crop density and overall yield quality.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Melanotus brunnipes is complex and long, typically spanning 3 to 5 years. Most of this time is spent in the soil as larvae. Adult beetles emerge in spring, feed, and then deposit eggs in the soil, favoring moist areas. Larval development occurs through multiple instars, with the larvae moving through soil layers in response to moisture and temperature gradients.

Pest significance: The hidden, soil-dwelling nature of the larvae makes them particularly dangerous. During wet seasons, larvae migrate to the upper soil layers to feed aggressively on young roots. Beyond direct physical destruction, the wounds caused by wireworms allow secondary pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria, to enter the plant, which often results in root rot and decreased plant vigor.

Control measures: Management of the brown-legged click beetle requires an integrated approach to maintain population levels below economic injury thresholds:
