Systematic position: The corn wireworm (Melanotus communis) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Elateridae. This beetle is a significant pest in agricultural fields, where its larvae, known as wireworms, live in the soil and cause severe damage to underground plant parts.
Target crops: This pest is a broad polyphage, affecting various agricultural crops. It shows a strong preference for corn, cereals, potatoes, and sunflowers. The larvae are particularly dangerous to young plants, often attacking seeds before germination or boring into the stems of emerging seedlings.
