Click beetle (Melanotus erythropygus)

Melanotus erythropygus is a species of click beetle (family Elateridae) that acts as a significant agricultural pest. The most destructive stage of this insect is the larva, commonly known as a wireworm. These larvae are characterized by their hard, elongated, and cylindrical bodies, which allow them to move easily through the soil.

The host range of Melanotus erythropygus is extensive, affecting cereal crops, maize, sunflowers, sugar beets, and various vegetable species. By residing in the soil, the wireworms target the seeds, germinating embryos, and primary root systems, which often leads to poor crop establishment and significant yield losses.

The life cycle of this click beetle involves complete metamorphosis. Female beetles lay eggs in soil patches that provide sufficient moisture and organic matter. Upon hatching, the larvae undergo multiple molts over several years. This extended larval stage makes them particularly difficult to eradicate, as they remain in the soil across multiple growing seasons.

The damage caused by this pest is primarily subterranean. Larvae bore into roots and tubers, creating channels that weaken the plant and allow secondary pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria, to infect the tissues. This damage often goes unnoticed until the crop shows symptoms of wilting or patches of crop failure become visible in the field.
