Long-lived click beetle

The long-lived click beetle (Melanotus longulus) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Elateridae family. This species is widely recognized as a significant soil-borne pest. In their larval stage, commonly known as wireworms, these insects pose a serious threat to agriculture by living in the soil and feeding on the underground structures of various host plants.

This pest affects a diverse range of agricultural crops, including cereals (wheat, barley, corn), oilseeds (sunflowers), and root crops (potatoes, sugar beets). The ability of the larvae to survive in various soil types makes them a persistent problem in large-scale commercial farming. They are particularly attracted to fields with high organic matter content and crop residues.

The life cycle of Melanotus longulus is complex and spans several years, typically ranging from three to five years to complete development. Females lay eggs in the soil, and the larvae develop through several instars. Because the larvae remain in the soil for such a long period, they are protected from many contact insecticides, making timing and method of intervention critical for successful control.

The damage caused by these insects is primarily directed at the seeds, roots, and underground stems. Wireworms bore into the seeds before germination or cut through the primary roots and stems of seedlings, leading to reduced plant density and significant yield losses. In severe cases, the crop may fail entirely, necessitating replanting efforts and additional costs for the farmer.

Effective management strategies focus on both cultural and chemical control. Key cultural practices include frequent tillage to expose larvae to natural predators, the use of crop rotation to break the life cycle, and proper weed control to eliminate alternative food sources. Chemical protection, such as seed treatments with systemic insecticides, remains the most reliable method when high infestation levels are detected during soil sampling.
