Description
The filbertworm (Latin: Melissopus latiferreanus) is a destructive insect species belonging to the family Tortricidae in the order Lepidoptera. It is recognized as a primary pest of various nut-bearing trees, specifically known for its impact on filberts (hazelnuts) and walnuts, primarily within North American orchards.
This pest targets the developing kernels of nuts. The larvae are notorious for boring through the shell and consuming the inner fruit tissue. Once inside, the larvae make the nuts unmarketable, causing significant economic losses for commercial growers and reducing the overall quality of home orchard harvests.
The life cycle of Melissopus latiferreanus typically involves one to two generations per year. The insect overwinters as mature larvae inside silken cocoons buried in the soil or protected under debris. Pupation occurs in the spring, followed by the emergence of moths that mate and lay eggs on or near the host plant's fruit.
Damage symptoms usually include small entry holes on the nut shell, often accompanied by frass (larval waste) near the site of infestation. Inside the shell, the kernel is extensively damaged or completely destroyed. Furthermore, the presence of the larva often facilitates the entry of pathogens, leading to fruit rot and premature fruit drop.
