Melitara is a genus of moths belonging to the family Pyralidae, commonly known as cactus moths. The larvae of these insects are specialized feeders on cacti, primarily targeting the genus Opuntia. In certain regions, they are recognized as significant pests, while in others, they have been introduced intentionally as a biological control agent to manage invasive cactus populations.

Systematically, Melitara is classified within the order Lepidoptera and the family Pyralidae (subfamily Phycitinae). These moths have evolved to feed exclusively on the succulent tissues of cacti, developing complex physiological mechanisms to overcome the physical and chemical defenses of their host plants.

The life cycle of Melitara follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult moth. Adult females lay eggs in characteristic chain-like clusters on cactus pads. Upon hatching, the larvae bore directly into the succulent flesh, feeding gregariously and creating extensive internal tunnels that eventually destroy the structural integrity of the plant.

The damage caused by Melitara larvae is often extensive and devastating. By boring inside the cactus pads, the larvae consume the internal parenchyma, leading to localized rotting, structural collapse, and eventual plant death. These entry holes and galleries also facilitate secondary infections by bacteria and fungi, which accelerate the decay process.
