These cacti are often farmed for their pads (nopales) and fruit, and heavy infestations by Melitara dentata larvae can result in severe economic losses, rendering the harvested produce unfit for commercial sale or human consumption.

Biology and life cycle are closely linked to the host's phenology. Adult moths lay egg sticks, typically on the spines of the cactus. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the succulent tissue, creating internal galleries.
