Mesochorus thoracicus belongs to the Ichneumonidae family within the order Hymenoptera. Unlike typical phytophagous pests that directly consume plant tissue, this species is classified as a hyperparasitoid. This means it acts as a secondary parasite, targeting beneficial primary parasitoids that would otherwise regulate the populations of major agricultural pests.

Its impact is primarily felt in ecosystems where primary parasitoids control lepidopteran larvae. By infesting those helpful insects, Mesochorus thoracicus indirectly causes damage to various agricultural crops, including cereals, vegetables, and ornamental plants, by preventing the natural suppression of primary pests like armyworms or loopers.

The biology of this wasp follows a complex developmental path. The adult female searches for hosts that are already infected by primary parasitoids. Once a suitable host is detected, the wasp oviposits directly into the larvae of the primary parasitoid. The larva of M. thoracicus then develops endoparasitically, eventually killing the beneficial primary parasitoid before it can reach adulthood.
