Mesosa

Mesosa is a genus of longhorn beetles (family Cerambycidae) within the order Coleoptera. These insects are classified as xylophagous, meaning their larvae feed primarily on the woody tissues of trees, making them significant pests in forestry and arboriculture.

These beetles typically infest various deciduous tree species, including oak, linden, hornbeam, and willow. Mesosa often targets stressed, dying, or recently felled timber. However, under favorable environmental conditions and high population density, they can attack seemingly healthy trees, causing substantial physiological stress.

The biology of Mesosa involves a developmental cycle where larvae hatch from eggs laid in bark crevices. Once emerged, larvae bore into the bark, cambium, and sometimes the xylem. The life cycle usually spans one or more years, depending on the climatic conditions of the specific geographic region and the quality of the host tree.

The damage caused by Mesosa is characterized by serpentine galleries carved under the bark. These tunnels disrupt the tree’s phloem and cambium layer, effectively cutting off the supply of nutrients and water. This damage weakens the tree’s resistance to secondary pathogens, including fungi and other wood-boring insects, leading to branch dieback.

Effective management strategies focus on preventing population outbreaks rather than just chemical control. Key measures include:

• Prompt removal of infested trees (sanitation logging).
• Use of trap trees to aggregate adult populations for removal.
• Application of residual insecticides to trunks during the adult flight period.
• General maintenance of tree health to improve natural defensive capabilities.

Monitoring is critical for early detection of Mesosa activity. By identifying entrance holes and frass on the bark, foresters and arborists can implement targeted interventions before the pest causes severe structural damage to the trees.
