Mango bud mite

The Mango bud mite (Metaculus mangiferae) is a microscopic pest belonging to the Eriophyidae family and the order Acariformes. It is a highly specialized mite that primarily targets mango trees, causing distinctive physiological disturbances and structural damage to the host plant.

This pest is exclusively associated with mango cultivation (Mangifera indica). It thrives by colonizing the buds, young leaves, and inflorescences. By feeding on the meristematic tissues, the mite disrupts the normal developmental pathways of the tree, which is a significant concern for commercial fruit production.

The biology of Metaculus mangiferae is characterized by a rapid life cycle consisting of egg, larval, and nymphal stages. These mites are extremely small and easily dispersed by wind currents or through infested grafting material, making their control challenging once an infestation is established in an orchard.

The primary damage symptom is the induction of malformation in vegetative and reproductive structures. Infested inflorescences often fail to produce fruit or develop into stunted, distorted masses, leading to severe yield loss. Persistent infestations can lead to the decline of the tree's health and reduced overall vigor.

Recommended management practices include:

• Sanitation through the pruning and destruction of infested shoots to reduce mite populations.
• Systemic application of acaricides during early bud burst to protect new growth.
