European red mite

The European red mite (Metatetranychus ulmi), often classified under the genus Panonychus, belongs to the family Tetranychidae within the order Trombidiformes. It is a major agricultural pest known for its cosmopolitan distribution and its ability to cause severe economic losses in fruit-growing regions across the globe.

This mite species primarily targets pome and stone fruits, including apple, pear, plum, and cherry trees. Beyond orchards, it can be found on various ornamental plants and deciduous forest trees, which acts as a reservoir for the pest, complicating control measures in commercial production areas.

The life cycle begins with the overwintering egg stage, typically found on the bark of twigs and spurs. As temperatures rise in spring, eggs hatch into larvae, followed by nymphal stages and finally adults. The entire life cycle from egg to adult can be completed in as little as 10–14 days in hot, dry conditions, allowing for multiple overlapping generations per year.

The damage caused by the European red mite is characterized by stippling of the foliage. As they feed on the cell sap, the leaves lose their green pigment, turn bronzed or greyish-brown, and eventually wither. In severe infestations, premature leaf drop occurs, which drastically reduces the photosynthetic capacity, tree vigor, and the quality of the fruit.
