Michaelopus is a genus of mites belonging to the family Acaridae (order Sarcoptiformes). These microscopic organisms are known as significant pests of various ornamental plants and agricultural crops. They are often found in decaying organic matter and soil, but they frequently infest living plant tissues, particularly bulbs and root systems.

The primary hosts for Michaelopus mites include bulbous crops such as lilies, tulips, hyacinths, and various tubers. These mites often target the basal plate of the bulbs, where they feed on the inner tissues. This feeding process causes severe physiological damage and serves as an entry point for secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens, leading to bulb rot.

The biological cycle of Michaelopus is highly dependent on humidity and temperature. Under optimal greenhouse conditions, the life cycle is rapid, allowing populations to explode within a short period. The mites can produce a specialized developmental stage known as a hypopus, which is highly resistant to desiccation and starvation, enabling the species to survive in challenging environments.

Damage symptoms usually appear as stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and the eventual decay of the root system. Infested bulbs may look shriveled, exhibit brown necrotic patches, or be entirely hollowed out by the mite population. Because these pests are easily transferred via infected soil or contaminated storage tools, early detection is vital for preventing widespread crop failure.

Control strategies involve a multi-faceted approach. Preventive measures include:

  • Thorough drying and cleaning of bulbs before storage.
  • Maintaining low-humidity environments in storage facilities.
  • Using systemic acaricides during pre-planting treatments.
  • Regular soil testing and crop rotation to minimize mite reservoirs.
  • Sanitizing all equipment and tools between uses to prevent cross-contamination.
