Description

Microdon mutabilis is a unique species of hoverfly belonging to the family Syrphidae (order Diptera). Unlike most hoverflies, which are pollinators or predators of aphids, this species is obligately myrmecophilous, meaning its entire larval stage occurs inside ant nests.

The species does not feed on crops directly; therefore, it is not considered a traditional agricultural pest. However, it affects ant colonies, specifically those of the genus Formica, which act as vital predators of various agricultural insect pests in field and forest environments.

The life cycle involves the female laying eggs near an ant mound. Upon hatching, the larvae enter the nest and assume a protective posture. They possess a thick, slug-like cuticle that allows them to survive the aggressive attacks of the host ants while they feed on the ant larvae over a developmental period that can last up to two years.

The ecological impact is characterized by the potential reduction of ant populations. Since ants provide essential natural pest control services by preying on herbivores that attack crops, the presence of Microdon mutabilis can disrupt these services, leading to a negative impact on the overall biological stability of the farm landscape.
