Microtydeus is a genus of mites belonging to the family Tydeidae, order Trombidiformes. While many species within this group are primarily saprophagous or predaceous, certain species are known to cause damage to vegetation. These microscopic pests are often overlooked due to their small size, but their presence can become a significant issue in specific agricultural environments.

These mites typically infest a variety of crops, including fruit trees, grapevines, and various ornamental or vegetable plants. They prefer sheltered environments such as the undersides of leaves, leaf axils, or deep bark crevices, which offer protection from predators and desiccation. Their cryptic lifestyle makes early detection difficult.

The life cycle of Microtydeus consists of several stages: egg, larva, and subsequent nymphal stages before reaching adulthood. They thrive in conditions with high humidity and moderate temperatures, which allows them to complete their development rapidly. Populations can increase significantly if environmental conditions remain stable and favorable for an extended period.

The damage caused by Microtydeus involves the destruction of plant cells as they feed on fluids. Symptoms include localized chlorosis, leaf distortion, and stunted growth. In severe infestations, the cumulative damage can lead to premature leaf drop, which weakens the plant's physiological structure and reduces overall harvest quality.
