Migdolus

Migdolus (Latin: Migdolus) is a genus of longhorn beetles belonging to the family Cerambycidae. These insects are significant pests in agricultural systems, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions, where their subterranean larval stage causes severe destruction to the root systems of various woody and perennial crops.

The host range of Migdolus is diverse, frequently affecting critical crops such as sugarcane, citrus orchards, vineyards, and commercial timber trees like eucalyptus. Because the larvae remain underground, they can inflict damage for several years before the infestation is detected, often resulting in significant economic losses for growers.

The life cycle of this pest is characterized by a prolonged larval stage that develops entirely within the soil. During this phase, larvae use their robust mandibles to bore into roots and tubers, disrupting nutrient and water transport within the host plant. The adult stage, while relatively short-lived, is crucial for reproduction and dispersal.

Infestation symptoms typically include stunted growth, chlorosis, reduced vigor, and the eventual death of the plant. Because the damage occurs below the soil surface, it is often misidentified as drought stress or nutrient deficiency, making early intervention difficult without specialized soil inspection techniques.
