Migdolus fonsecai

Description

Migdolus fonsecai is a beetle species belonging to the family Cerambycidae, order Coleoptera. It is a highly destructive soil-dwelling pest that spends the majority of its life cycle underground as a larva. Primarily found in South America, particularly in Brazil, this pest poses a severe threat to commercial agricultural systems, often causing significant economic losses in monoculture plantations.

This species is considered a polyphagous pest, with a particular preference for crops such as sugar cane, eucalyptus, and various fruit-bearing vines. The larvae cause damage by tunneling into the root systems of the host plants, which disrupts the transport of water and nutrients from the soil to the plant canopy. While the adult beetles can also interact with plant tissues, the root-boring larvae are responsible for the vast majority of direct plant mortality.

The biological cycle of Migdolus fonsecai is complex and long-lasting, often spanning several years depending on soil temperature, humidity, and the availability of host roots. Females typically deposit eggs in the soil near the base of the plant. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately migrate into the root zone to feed, progressing through several larval instars while systematically destroying the plant’s structural and nutritional base.

The external symptoms of an infestation include leaf yellowing (chlorosis), wilting, and reduced growth, often progressing to the total death of the plant. Because the damage is subterranean, it is frequently undetected until the root system has been severely compromised, making rescue treatments ineffective. Consequently, managing this pest relies heavily on long-term prevention rather than reactive eradication.

Recommended control measures include:

  • deep soil tillage prior to planting to expose and physically destroy larvae;
  • monitoring adult beetle populations using light traps during their emergence period;
  • implementing strategic crop rotation with non-host species to break the life cycle;
  • applying registered soil-applied insecticides specifically targeting the larval stages.
