Lyctus beetle

Minthea rugicollis, commonly associated with the group of powderpost beetles, belongs to the family Silvanidae. This beetle is a significant pest of seasoned wood, primarily affecting hardwoods. It is specialized in colonizing dry timber, making it a major concern for lumber yards, furniture manufacturers, and importers of exotic wood products.

The beetle specifically targets woods with high starch content, which serves as the primary nutrient source for its larvae. It is frequently intercepted in tropical timber, plywood, and various wood components used in construction and decor. Because the damage occurs internally, the presence of the infestation is often overlooked until structural integrity is already compromised.

The life cycle of Minthea rugicollis is highly influenced by ambient temperature and wood moisture content. Females oviposit in wood pores or crevices. Upon hatching, larvae burrow deep into the timber, creating intricate tunnels. The duration of the life cycle varies depending on environmental conditions but generally involves several months of larval feeding before pupation and adult emergence.

The damage caused by this insect is characterized by the presence of fine, powdery frass filling the larval galleries. As the larvae consume the interior of the wood, they gradually transform the timber into a fragile, hollowed-out material. Eventually, adult beetles exit through small, round holes on the surface, which is the most visible indicator of an active infestation.

Management and prevention focus on eliminating the pest from infested goods and protecting new material from colonization.
