Iwasaki cicada

The Iwasaki cicada (Mogannia iwasakii) is a member of the Cicadidae family, belonging to the order Hemiptera. This insect is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, particularly prevalent in East Asian regions such as Japan and Taiwan. It is notoriously known for its negative impact on commercial crops, with a specific preference for sugarcane plantations.

The primary damage is caused by both nymphs and adult insects that feed on the plant sap. By extracting essential nutrients from the roots and stems, the cicada weakens the host plant, resulting in stunted growth, chlorosis, and eventual death of the affected tissues. For farmers, this translates into severe reductions in yield and sugar content, representing a major economic challenge.

The life cycle of Mogannia iwasakii is characterized by a prolonged subterranean phase. The nymphs reside in the soil, feeding on roots for an extended period, which can span several years. Once they reach maturity, they emerge from the soil to undergo their final molt. This subterranean behavior makes monitoring and early intervention particularly difficult for agronomic management.

In addition to sap extraction, the oviposition process (egg-laying) causes mechanical damage to the sugarcane stalks. These injuries create entry points for opportunistic pathogens, leading to secondary infections that further devastate the crop. The presence of large numbers of adults, identified by their characteristic mating calls, is often a warning sign of an impending outbreak within the field.

Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies are essential for control:

• Deep tillage of the soil to disturb and eliminate nymphs before they reach maturity.
• Implementing crop rotation to disrupt the life cycle of the pest population.
• Application of biological control agents, such as entomopathogenic fungi.
• Targeted use of systemic insecticides during the peak emergence of adult cicadas to reduce the breeding population.
