Japanese mole

The Japanese mole (Mogera wogura) is a mammal belonging to the order Eulipotyphla and the family Talpidae. Despite being primarily insectivorous, its subterranean habits classify it as a significant pest in agricultural and horticultural settings. Native to East Asia, this animal is known for its robust digging capabilities and its ability to adapt to various soil types found in cultivated areas.

This pest affects a wide range of crops, including vegetables, grains, and nursery stock. The primary damage occurs when the mole disrupts the root zone of plants during excavation. By lifting or severing root systems, the mole causes plants to lose access to water and nutrients, which frequently results in stunted growth or complete plant mortality, particularly in delicate young seedlings.

The biology of Mogera wogura is marked by high metabolic activity. These animals are solitary and territorial, requiring a large area for hunting earthworms and soil insects. Their breeding season typically results in a small litter once a year. Because they do not hibernate, their digging activity continues throughout the year, causing ongoing damage to soil structure and crop stability.

Damage is characterized by visible mounds of soil (molehills) and collapsed tunnels on the surface. These disruptions not only harm plants directly but also expose the soil to desiccation. Furthermore, the tunnels created by the mole serve as highways for other pests, such as voles and mice, which may then gain access to and consume bulbs, seeds, or the roots of crops, compounding the agricultural damage.
