Description
Systematic position: The Eastern mole (Scalopus aquaticus) belongs to the order Eulipotyphla and the family Talpidae. It is a highly specialized fossorial mammal, perfectly adapted for life in subterranean environments, equipped with powerful forelimbs for excavating extensive tunnel systems.
Biology and life cycle: These mammals are solitary, territorial creatures that remain active throughout the year. They possess a high metabolic rate, requiring constant foraging for food. Females give birth to one litter annually, typically in late winter or early spring, with offspring reaching independence quickly, leading to rapid expansion of their population in favorable soil conditions.
Nature of damage and harmfulness: While primarily insectivorous, the Eastern mole causes significant damage to agricultural operations by tunneling through soil. This activity uproots plants, damages delicate root systems, and creates large air pockets that lead to plant dehydration. The physical displacement of soil also ruins the aesthetics and utility of lawns, fields, and garden beds.
Affected crops: The species poses a risk to root vegetables, bulbous plants, potato crops, and newly planted saplings in nurseries. Moreover, their tunnel network provides secondary access for smaller rodents, such as voles, which feed directly on crops, turning the mole's tunnels into high-traffic paths for further destruction of the root systems.
Control measures: Management requires a combination of physical barriers and deterrence.
