Taxonomic classification: The spruce longhorn beetle (Molorchus minor) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. It is a common wood-boring insect distributed throughout the Palearctic region, known for its specific affinity to coniferous host trees, particularly in managed and natural forest ecosystems.

Host plants: The primary host for this species is Norway spruce (Picea abies). However, the beetle can also be found on other conifers such as silver fir, pine, and larch species. It typically acts as a secondary pest, preferring to attack weakened, dying, or freshly felled trees, although populations can explode during drought periods.

Biology and life cycle: Adult beetles are active during the late spring and early summer. Females lay their eggs in bark crevices. Upon hatching, larvae burrow into the phloem and cambium layers, creating intricate galleries. The larval stage typically overwinters within the wood, and pupation occurs in the spring, with adults emerging later to continue the cycle.

Damage and economic impact: The damage is caused by the larval feeding process, which severs the vascular tissues of the tree, effectively disrupting nutrient and water transport. Heavy infestation leads to the weakening and subsequent death of the tree. Economic losses include degraded timber quality and increased susceptibility of the forest stand to secondary infections.

Control measures: Integrated pest management is essential to minimize damage caused by this beetle. Recommended practices include:

• sanitary harvesting and removal of infested trees before adult emergence;
• timely removal of slash and logging debris to prevent breeding sites;
• maintaining forest health and stand vigor to increase tree resistance;
• regular monitoring of forest stands using visual inspections or pheromone traps where applicable to track population spikes.
