Cactus longhorn beetle

The genus Moneilema belongs to the longhorn beetle family (Cerambycidae) within the order Coleoptera. These insects, commonly known as cactus longhorn beetles, are flightless and have evolved to thrive in arid desert environments. Their sturdy, black exoskeletons provide protection while they roam across their host plants in search of food and mates.

These beetles primarily target cacti, particularly those in the genus Opuntia. In both natural habitats and controlled environments like greenhouses or botanical gardens, they can cause significant damage. The loss of valuable cactus specimens is a common concern for growers who encounter this persistent pest during the active growing season.

The life cycle of Moneilema involves a destructive larval stage. Females lay eggs near the base or on the surface of the cactus. Upon hatching, the larvae bore directly into the succulent stems. They spend their larval stage tunneling through the internal flesh, consuming the plant's core tissues and disrupting its structural integrity and nutrient transport.

Damage caused by these beetles is often severe and can be terminal for the host plant. As the larvae tunnel through the succulent interior, they weaken the stem, making the cactus susceptible to environmental stress and opportunistic pathogens. Secondary infections caused by bacteria or fungi often enter through the exit holes created by the larvae, leading to rot and rapid decay.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Manual removal of adult beetles, especially during their nocturnal activity, is the most straightforward control method. For significant infestations, systematic monitoring is essential. When larvae are deeply entrenched within the stems, professional application of systemic insecticides is often necessary to reach the pests and prevent further destruction of the cactus.
