Ussuri relic longhorn beetle

Systematic position: The Ussuri relic longhorn beetle (Monochamus grandis) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. As a significant wood-boring insect, it is a well-known pest in coniferous forests of the Far East, where it exerts a strong influence on forest health and wood quality.

Affected host plants: This species is a specialized dendrophage that primarily targets coniferous tree species. Its main host plants include various species of fir (Abies), with a particular preference for the Khingan fir. Trees that are already stressed due to drought, defoliation, or other insect attacks are significantly more susceptible to infestation by this beetle.

Biology and life cycle: The beetle's life cycle typically spans two to three years. Adults emerge during the summer months, engaging in maturation feeding on the bark and young shoots of host trees. After mating, females cut slits into the bark to deposit their eggs. Once hatched, the larvae bore into the bark and eventually penetrate deep into the sapwood to complete their development and pupate.

Damage and economic impact: The primary damage is caused by the larval stage, which creates extensive galleries under the bark and within the xylem. This mechanical destruction disrupts the transport of water and nutrients, leading to rapid tree decline and eventual mortality. Furthermore, the larval galleries significantly decrease the economic value of timber, making it unsuitable for construction or high-quality wood production.

Protection measures: Effective management of the Ussuri relic longhorn beetle requires strict adherence to silvicultural practices:
