Systematic position: The spotted black sawyer (Monochamus impluviatus) is a species of long-horned beetle (Cerambycidae) belonging to the Coleoptera order. It is recognized as a significant technical pest, specifically targeting coniferous tree species throughout its Eurasian habitat range.

Host plants: This beetle primarily attacks coniferous trees, including species of spruce, pine, and larch. While the insect typically prefers stressed, dying, or recently felled timber, it is also capable of colonizing apparently healthy trees during periods of high population density, leading to widespread damage in forested areas.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Monochamus impluviatus typically spans one to two years depending on environmental temperatures. Adults emerge in the summer months to feed on twigs and needles. Females create oviposition scars in the bark to deposit eggs. Larvae initially feed under the bark before boring deep into the wood, creating an extensive network of tunnels that causes severe structural damage.
