Large spruce wood wasp

Systematic position: The large spruce wood wasp (Monochamus sartor) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorn beetles. It is a major wood-boring pest that significantly impacts conifer-dominated ecosystems across Europe and parts of Asia.

Host plants: The primary host for this beetle is the Norway spruce. However, it also attacks various fir species, pine trees, and other conifers. It typically colonizes trees that are already stressed by environmental factors, drought, or storm damage, although healthy trees are also susceptible during peak population outbreaks.

Biology and life cycle: The beetle's life cycle generally spans two to three years depending on local climatic conditions. Females lay eggs under the bark in small, surgically carved notches. Upon hatching, larvae feed on the cambium layer before boring deeper into the xylem, where they carve extensive tunnels, weaken the tree's structure, and eventually pupate.

Damage and impact: Adult beetles cause damage by feeding on the tender bark of young shoots, which can stunt tree growth. The most severe impact comes from the larvae; their deep tunneling creates extensive galleries in the wood. This structural damage renders timber commercially useless and creates entry points for secondary wood-rotting fungi and pathogens, accelerating the death of the host tree.

Control measures: Management strategies primarily focus on silvicultural practices, such as the rapid removal of windthrown, fire-damaged, or heavily infested trees before the next generation of adults emerges. Integrated pest management (IPM) may involve the use of synthetic pheromone traps to monitor adult flight periods. In specific nursery settings, professional insecticide applications can be utilized to protect high-value seedlings.
