Description

Systematic position. The black pine sawyer (Monochamus subfasciatus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorned beetles. This species is recognized as a significant wood-boring pest that poses a threat to the health of coniferous forests.

Host plants. The primary hosts for this species are various pine species (Pinus). It also infests spruce (Picea) and fir (Abies). The beetles typically target weakened, stressed, or recently felled timber, though they can successfully attack healthy trees when populations are dense.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Monochamus subfasciatus typically spans one to two years, depending on environmental conditions. Adult beetles emerge in the summer to feed on the bark of young twigs. Following mating, females chew small niches into the bark of trunks to deposit eggs. Larvae hatch and begin tunneling under the bark, eventually boring deep into the xylem.
