The small spruce sawyer (Monochamus sutor) is a wood-boring beetle belonging to the Cerambycidae family. This species is a significant technical pest within coniferous forests across Eurasia. The adult beetle is characterized by its deep black coloration with a metallic sheen, typically measuring between 15 and 30 mm in length, with notably long antennae.

This beetle primarily infests coniferous tree species, with a particular preference for spruce, pine, fir, and larch. While the sawyer typically targets weakened, stressed, or wind-fallen timber, it can successfully colonize healthy trees during periods of high population density, leading to widespread mortality in affected forest areas.

The lifecycle of the insect generally spans one to two years, influenced significantly by regional climate conditions. Females create oviposition niches in the bark, where they deposit eggs. Upon hatching, the larvae initially feed on the phloem and cambium layers before boring deep into the sapwood and heartwood to create extensive galleries, which they pack with frass.
