Green mite

The genus Mononychellus comprises a group of mites within the family Tetranychidae. These pests are notorious for causing substantial agricultural losses, particularly in regions where cassava is a primary food security crop. As members of the spider mite group, they utilize piercing-sucking mouthparts to damage host plants, leading to severe physiological stress in agricultural landscapes.

These mites predominantly target species within the Euphorbiaceae family. While they are most famous for their impact on cassava, they can inhabit a range of related botanical hosts. Their distribution is highly influenced by environmental factors, with populations surging during prolonged dry spells or periods of low humidity, which are ideal for their rapid development.

The life cycle of a Mononychellus mite progresses through several stages: egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult. This development is remarkably rapid in warm environments, allowing for the completion of many generations within a single growing season. This high reproductive rate often leads to exponential population growth, which can overwhelm a crop field in a matter of weeks.

The damage caused by these mites is primarily characterized by the chlorosis of young leaves. As the mites feed on the cells, they strip the plant of chlorophyll, leading to leaf distortion, stunted growth, and premature senescence. In severe infestations, the entire canopy of the plant can be affected, which significantly reduces the photosynthetic capacity and, ultimately, the final harvest yield.

Effective management requires an integrated approach that minimizes reliance on broad-spectrum chemicals. Strategic measures include the following:

• deploying biological control agents, such as predatory mites (Phytoseiidae);
• implementing drought-resilient farming techniques;
• utilizing resistant plant varieties bred for pest tolerance;
• strictly monitoring field edges to identify early-stage outbreaks before they spread.
